Standards of proficiency – Social workers in England – Health Professions Council – 25 June 2012

“Social workers in England will be regulated by the HPC (to be renamed the Health and Care Professions Council – HCPC) from Wednesday 1 August 2012.

The standards of proficiency (SoPs) set out what a social worker in England should know, understand and be able to do when they complete their social work training so that they can register with the HCPC. They set out clear expectations of a social worker’s knowledge and abilities when they start practising.

The work to set the standards of proficiency for social workers in England has developed alongside the work of the Social Work Reform Board. One outcome of the Reform Board, the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF), is now managed by the College of Social Work.

The PCF describes the capabilities required of social workers at all stages of their career, whilst the SoPs set out what a social worker must know, understand and be able to do when they start practising for the first time.

As both the PCF and the SoPs were produced at the same time and will both be used by social work stakeholders, we have worked with The College of Social Work to map the SoPs to the PCF so that stakeholders can see how the two documents interact. We have published the mapping below.
